Feng Jicai Research Institute of Literature and Art

Chinese Inheritors of Oral History Research Center

Authorized jointly by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association as well as Tianjin University, and backed by the Feng Jicai Research Institute of Literature and Art of Tianjin University, the Research Center of Chinese Inheritors' Oral History is the first national-level research institute that centers on expanding the practice of fieldwork and construction of the theory of inheritors of oral history, as a form of intangible cultural heritage.

Early this century, a part of the project to rescue Chinese folk cultural legacy, Feng Jicai creatively applied the theory and method of oral history to the protection of folk cultural heritage and filled the gaps in the area of national inheritors of oral history. Since that time, people-oriented theory and thoughts of paying attention to inheritors’ cultural memory and historical consciousness developed into academic theories of systematic and scientific fieldwork. From 2005, folk culture workers continuously collected and recorded inheritors of oral history from fieldwork, successively launching systematic investigations, organization and publication of oral history. In a decade, books like Chinese Outstanding Folk Culture Inheritors Series, Chinese Wood-block New Year Picture Inheritors Oral History Series, and Cultural Heritage Achieves of Imperial Heavenly Queen Temple in Tian Jin were consecutively published. And in the fall of 2011, “further studies on Chinese New Year pictures database construction and oral history methodology" was included as a major project of the National Social Science Fund (No. 11&ZD064), and  monograph Methodology Studies on Inheritors Oral History of 300,000 words was completed within three years.

Taking research methods from disciplines such as anthropology, history, literature, folklore and communication, Chinese Inheritors of Oral History Research Center conducts theoretical discussion and research on the oral history of inheritors and creates its own academic research methods. It established the theoretical system of inheritors of oral history, providing the theory and guidance for the protection of folk cultural heritage.

Chinese Inheritors of Oral History Research Center is engaged in the collection, recording, organization and conservation of endangered folk culture, and tries to create conditions for publication and propagation, leading the public to develop a cultural consciousness of the importance of cultural memory and folk cultural heritage inheritors.

The research center has systemically collected and stored firsthand data of cultural heritage inheritors, including audio, video, images and text data, and has built a digital archive of inheritors of oral history and of folk cultural memory to operate, manage and, conserve a “sound history” of cultural legacy inheritors for the people.

Standing at the academic frontier, the research center holds academic conferences and establishes academic publications to promote and enrich its academic work. At the same time, it has been involved in academic exchange activities related to oral history both at home and abroad, aiming at spreading the academic theory and vision of the Feng Jicai Culture and Art Research Institute.

Theoretical results are widely applied to the fieldwork of inheritors of oral history through the cultivation of folk cultural workers. Therefore, the preservation and protection project of Chinese folk cultural legacy can be conducted in a scientific and systematic way.
