National Engineering and Technology Research Center

 

The National Engineering and Technology Research Center for Industrial Crystallization (the "crystallization center") is the only national industrial crystallization technology research and promotion center established on the basis of Tianjin University's National Industrial Crystallization Technology Research Center and the Medical Crystalline Engineering Research Center. Since 1979, the “Crystallization center” and its predecessors have been committed to the research of industrial crystallization process engineering and the development of new industrial crystallization technology and equipment. To date, the Center has taken 11 national key scientific and technological research and technology support projects from the 6th Five-Year Plan to the 12th Five-Year Plan, 3 national key promotion projects, 10 international cooperative projects, and over 100 national and provincial funded projects and production-study-research cooperation projects. The Center has won 15 national and provincial awards including a second prize of National Technology Invention (2008), third prize of National Technology Invention (1996), 2 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Awards (1999, 1996), 2 first prizes of Science and Technology Progress Awards of the Education Ministry(2006,1998), first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the State Education Committee(1995),first prize of Tianjin Technology Invention Awards  (2007). The Center was successively awarded the technical support institution for the projects of the Key Promotion Plan on State Scientific and Technological Achievements in the 8th and 9th  Five-Year Plans by the State Science and Technology Commission.

 

For over 30 years, under the leadership of academician Wang Jingkang, the “crystal center” successively finished national key technology research and technology support projects from the 6th Five-Year Plan to the 11th Five-Year Plan. Accepted experts’ conclude that it has reached the international advanced level. More than hundred companies from the pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, metallurgy, materials, food and other industries have set up hundreds of crystallization production lines with independent intellectual property rights, applying packages of modern crystallization systems and intelligent devices. New industrial crystallization technology and equipment have spread across more than 20 regions nationwide which, according to incomplete statistics, created more than 260 million RMB of new profits and taxes for the State and companies each year and produced 1.23 billion RMB of newly increased output value, having remarkable economic and social benefits.

 

The "Crystallization center” meets the key generic technology demands of a large chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, chemical fertilizer industry, national defense industry, materials and information electronics industry and other industries involved in massive particle products and high-end crystallization products. The Center carries out research on industrial crystallization process and particles, industrial crystallization process system engineering technology and functional industrialization product engineering. It also researches and develops new industrial crystallization technology and equipment with independent intellectual property rights, forming integrated innovation and conducting multi-scale research from the molecular level to integrated innovative industrialization, and offers one-stop engineering services from research - development - engineering enlargement - design to industrialization.

 

The "Crystallization center" has more than 60 permanent staff, including a Chinese Academy of Engineering Professor,six Professors, eight Associate Professors and more than 60 temporary staff including post doctors, doctors and postgraduates. The Center has cultivated  58 doctors (among which 18 were cultivated in cooperation plans between the Center and some famous universities abroad),163 masters,14 post-doctors, and has published more than 430 dissertations among which 2 dissertations were elected to the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Nomination" (2009, 2010).The textbook, Chemical Process Design, coauthored by teams in the period of the 10th Five-year Plan won the 1st prize in the Excellent Text Material Award by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association  (2007), teaching achievements won three national prizes, and was rewarded by the National and Provincial "team" three times (1996,1996,2009).

 

Currently the crystallization center covers an area of 20000 square meters, a construction area of 8109 m2, and has the value of nearly ten million RMB of international first-class research equipment and development platforms. The basic experiment research department is equipped with laboratories for distillation crystallization, reaction crystallization, melt crystallization and crystal transformation, Nano crystals, whisker preparation, targeted drugs and more refined field effect and other laboratories with more than 50;Quality Monitoring Analysis Centers, which hold a R -Japanese AXIS 18 kw single crystal measurement system, to the state of the art Japanese neo-Confucianism 18 kw X-ray powder diffraction, an American LASENTEX company online detection system, farmar crystallization process laser particle size analyzer, etc. The Engineering amplifier design department and industrialization base are located in the Tianjin Binhai New Area, including computational fluid mechanics and engineering laboratory, computer aided design, engineering safety evaluation office and pilot plant. Research and development of intelligent industrial crystallization device manufacturing has five axis numerical control machining centers, and FLUENT fluid mechanics design calculation software, etc.

 

The "Crystallization center” enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad, it is recognized as a well-known current domestic and international authority unit of science and technology research and development of industrial crystallization. The center has hosted the international conference 6 times and the domestic meeting 5 times. Since 1980, the crystallization center has established long-term cooperation relationships with the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, Pennsylvania State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rice University, the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, and University of Western Ontario. It formed the model that Postgraduates are better cultivated by both Chinese and foreign bases. Its achievements in teaching reform, “the construction of chemical diversification and internationalization of graduate education innovation systems" won the first prize of the 2009 National Teaching Achievement awards.
