On the occasion of the 55th Earth Day, Tianjin University organized an enlightening "Cloud Class" session focusing on green engergy technologies for environmental conservation, connecting over a thousand teachers and students from multiple institutions, including Dazhai Nine-Year School in Tanchang County, Gansu Province, and Buerjin Junior High School in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

A key feature of this Cloud Class was exploring the “Distributed PV (photovoltaic) Model”, a solar power generation setup situated on the rooftop of the Dazhai Nine-Year School about 1,700 kilometers away from Tianjin University. In 2022, the School of Electrical and Information Engineering conceived and implemented this system, which has since generated nearly 50,000 kWh, equating to an electricity savings of over 30,000 yuan. The proceeds have been donated directly to Dazhai Nine-Year School, enhancing its educational facilities and resources.

The outlook of Dazhai School in Tanchang County

“Do you have any idea about how the solar panels on our building convert sunlight into electricity?” asked Dr. Chen Xiaolong and Dr. Song Guanyu in the Cloud Class, both associate professors from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering. Their lectured on electric power conversion and PV technology, guiding participants through the intricacies of energy conversion mechanics and illustrating how advancements in technology could contribute to environmental preservation.

This power generation system showcases the commitments of TJU to fostering rural education through science and technology. The TJU Graduate Voluntary Teaching Group join hands with a student vacation social practice team from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering and together built an education base in Dazhai School of Tanchang county. They set up a popular sciecne exhibition and hold regular lectures and seminars on electric power and PV technology to local students. Dong Zihao, a member of the Graduate Voluntary Teaching Group said: “Our unconventional teaching approach is highly favored by the students. They thoroughly enjoyed our cloud class.”

In recent years, Tianjin University has been dedicated to the Cloud Class initiative. Based on the university’s multi-discipline advantages, this online platform invites professors and topnotch students to give engaging and inspiring courses to primary and secondary students in Tangchang, Gansu and Buerjin, Xinjiang. In future, TJU will prepare and present more online courses on self development, psychological education, popular science, traditional culture and other educational resources to the children living in rural areas in the west of China
